Continuing in our inspiration series – we got to thinking about how would bathroom lighting be for a Sultan? So we took a digital hop over to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey to check it out.

Under the Ottoman Empire, the Topkapi Palace was richly decorated and designed with inlaid pearls and various precious artifacts. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world with hundreds of rooms and is a visited tourist site today.

While you might not have the same budget – you can mimic the designs for an arabesque look that is exotic, fresh and vibrant. I believe the lighting below is ideal for a moonlight. It would let in natural light over the faucet or shower area.

You can also put in recessed lighting into a design like this – and both options are equally pleasing to the eye.

Topkapi Palace Bathroom Light

Looking at the picture again – its not so exotic that it would be out of place in a modern bathroom. As it is, it could be a ceiling out of a loft or a penthouse.

So we’ve started putting in pictures and ideas of beautiful lighting to provide you tips on going idea hunting on your own – or you can just view the pics on our blog and take inspiration from there.

2.) Ebay: Here you will find a huge collection of brand new bath light products. Start by typing in “Kichler” then narrow down to “bathroom lights.”

3.) Craigslist: Go to craigslist.org and select the city you live in or the closest urban area to you, the type in “Kichler.” You are going to find some great bargains – I can tell you that much. I’ve seen brand new in-the-box lighting sell for 50% of the pricing.

You have your new bathroom design all figured out: new fixtures, new accents and a lovely, relaxing environment. Your bathroom ceiling light and other lighting needs, however, present many appealing options.

What should you go with? Among your choices is one idea that has been around for many years but has gained more and more popularity among modern builders and designers. Recessed lighting. You have probably seen this kind of lighting on a small scale.

They are the kinds of lights that are inside some showers. The round-but-flattened bulb set into a hole in the ceiling, emitting a soft but bright effect.

At first glance, this might seem far too simple for your tastes, but recessed lighting can be an effective lighting method. It is so much more than just some light in the shower ceiling. Today’s recessed lighting designs offer an attractive option to light up all or part of your bathroom.

That’s a basic and simple pendant light, but your choices are by no means limited to that. Pendant lights come in an array of styles from retro to classical to hip and chic. These beautiful light fixtures are great for adding a unique air of romantic whimsy to your favorite room in the house. They come in many shapes, styles and colors and can be hung at varying lengths, so you have a lot of room to play to achieve the lighting you envision.

Pendant lighting is fairly affordable, and while it was made quite popular in the heyday of the 1970s and 80s, it is making a comeback in a big way. Pendant lights are a great choice for setting the mood and atmosphere of your bathroom. Add a dimmer switch, and you have perfect bathroom lighting that everyone will love.

Now, what kind of thought have you put into bathroom vanity lights? It’s still not uncommon to see a bathroom mirror with bulbs all around or a big light, often even a fluorescent light, right above it. Sure, there’s a lot of light, but have you seen the glare and unflattering way these lighting choices reflect things in the mirror?

They make your hair look wispy and odd and your skin takes on an unnatural look, making it difficult to for successful styling, make-up and grooming. Not to mention these false reflections leave you feeling that you really don’t look your best. So, get rid of the old bulb concept and choose a better option.

There are plenty of gorgeous ideas for vanity lighting. A prevailing trend is a row of lights over the mirror with soft, pretty fixtures that give you plenty of flattering light.

These come in many styles and can be just a pair of lights or several lights, depending on how much vanity lighting you need. For bathrooms with large mirrors, especially the kind that take up one wall along the sink area, 2 or 3 vanity fixture sets might be needed. These are a gorgeous alternative to the simple yet unflattering lighting of yesteryear.

For smaller bathrooms, you might consider a different approach. Take my bathroom for instance. I have a rather small bathroom with limited vanity space. My mirror is extremely small compared to a lot of bathrooms. Still, I needed lighting and wanted a pretty touch. I opted for single sconces on either side of my mirror. They offer a nice romantic look and soft flattering light.

With all the lighting options, you’re sure to find something perfectly suited to your want and style.

Remodeling your bathroom or even just jazzing it up doesn’t have to be a dreaded ordeal. Here’s a few simple ideas for shaping up your favorite room in the house.

Think soft colors. Whether you are a man or a woman, soft colors are kind to the senses. You will relax more and find your bathroom an enjoyable experience if you get rid of dark or bright colors and loud patterns.

White is okay too, so long as you add in some soft colored accessories to avoid that empty, institutional look. Roomy is good and you will at least want a smooth finish on which to rest your bones.

Now to set the atmosphere itself. Candles and soft scents (or even spicy scents such as cinnamon, as long as they’re not too strong) are a great way to set your bathroom up for sensational relaxation. I can already smell those wonderful scents as I imagine sinking into that enticing tub full of warm bubbles!

Lighting is perhaps the most overlooked part of redecorating a bathroom. In a room where you examine your hair, make-up and other things very closely, you will want to create adequate lighting conditions.

Your bathroom ceiling light should provide enough all-around lighting that you don’t have to strain your eyes to see what you are doing. Adequate lighting also makes the atmosphere in your bathroom a lot more comfortable.

If you bathroom if fairly large, consider two ceiling light fixtures placed an equal distance apart. you may also want to consider vanity lighting for the mirror. You want balanced lighting, so use soft light with mid-range wattage.

Energy efficient lights are great, but try to avoid to much in the way of flourescents, as they not only create harsh lighting, but also aren’t the best lighting for examining your hairstyle. (Trust me, I did it once and my hair always looked funny in the glare that light.)

Another great way to make use of light is a strategically placed window to allow sunlight in, glass blocks (can be used for walls, floors, showers, around the tub and even in the ceiling) that will reflect an optimize your lighting and special light reflectant ceilings which reduce glare and eye strain, provide brighter spaces and are very kind to you wallet as well.

I hope these tips and tricks will help you make the most of your ultimate bathroom project. Happy re-decorating!

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror in the morning, thought you looked great, then left the house only to find out that something is missing? It may be that your bathroom lighting is failing you. Your bathroom lights don’t flatter you or perhaps flatter you too much.

So, in order to get the perfect balance of lighting, it is necessary to look at what the most popular bathroom lights do and how to mix the different types of lighting available to create the best look.

One very popular trend these days is recessed lighting. However, they can be problematic if they are the only light in your bathroom, thus sending you into a shadow and not allowing you the best vision.

Similarly, using a recessed light that has a halogen bulb can have an effect that makes you look more like a Jack-O-Lantern and less like yourself.

The best lighting balance is to use recessed lighting in combination with other more general forms of lighting. When using recessed lighting, try to place the wall mounted lights near the mirror to cut down on shadows.

When creating the best lighting look possible, it’s best to start with lights that will be bright enough for you to be able to shave or apply makeup, but to have enough soft light to complement facial features. Additionally, for the vanity area, try using colored or coated bulbs.

Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure that the light accents everything else in the room—the plumbing accessories, tile, and wallpaper. Of course, make sure that the lighting is safe for the room.

Do not put portable lamps in the room since their proximity to the sink or tub can create quite a lot of electrical problems. Similarly, make sure that anything that will be used in a damp location is UL rated for damp locations.

Ultimately, remember that brightness and lots of light is the best choice. The light can always be dimmed with the addition of a dimmer switch.

If you have a larger than average bathroom – one that has a changing area, or perhaps his-and-hers sinks then you might want to consider installing track lighting.

While out of place and supersized for small powder rooms – a well-placed track lighting system would be ideal for longer areas. I’ve seen many bathrooms which are elongated and have a tub, then a shower and two sinks on the side along with the toilet.

You can position it towards the mirrors, making the glow deflect off a soft color right so that the glare doesn’t get you. Silver and White would be two of the most popular colors for the system – but you can see which adds a better effect according to the paint color.

I also recommend getting smaller bulbs – as even larger bathrooms might end up looking strange with the normal sized tracks. Also you will have to do something about the wire that hangs down – always go with a certified electrician who can properly advise and do the procedure for you.

Stay tuned for more tips and ideas and I’ll also be uploading some nice pics of what looks good to give you more choices to work with.

For most of us – a typical morning routine involves waking sheepishly in the morning and stepping into the shower half-awake and half-asleep. Then its a quick dash to realize you’re late for work, and you quickly get dresses as fast as possible.

To make sure you have your clothes on right, and you look great – you need proper lighting in your bathroom.

The type and number of bathroom lighting fixtures you need is variable to the size and shape of your bathroom and how much natural light it receives.

Some bathroom ceiling lights are now available with a fan and a heater. Imagine the comfortable warmth and coziness of warm air greeting you as a get dressed on a cold, wintry day.

If you decide to go this route – make sure you get one that has different switches. That will help you save on electricity – but check with a certified electrician first about your options and the best way to move forward.
