You have your new bathroom design all figured out: new fixtures, new accents and a lovely, relaxing environment. Your bathroom ceiling light and other lighting needs, however, present many appealing options.

What should you go with? Among your choices is one idea that has been around for many years but has gained more and more popularity among modern builders and designers. Recessed lighting. You have probably seen this kind of lighting on a small scale.

They are the kinds of lights that are inside some showers. The round-but-flattened bulb set into a hole in the ceiling, emitting a soft but bright effect.

At first glance, this might seem far too simple for your tastes, but recessed lighting can be an effective lighting method. It is so much more than just some light in the shower ceiling. Today’s recessed lighting designs offer an attractive option to light up all or part of your bathroom.

Recessed lighting can be placed into the ceiling, the walls and even the floor to create a beautiful effect any homeowner would be proud of. These lights, by no means have to be boring. They come in many shapes and sizes and can be strategically placed to form a pattern or design that is both interesting and aesthetically pleasing.

There really are now limitations to using recessed lighting, except maybe the size of your bathroom, and of course your imagination. Recessed lighting gives you a lot of room to play around and find the perfect lighting effect to suit you and your new bathroom.

While recessed bathroom lighting is intended to blend into the architecture of your bathroom, choosing the right style will achieve all of your lighting needs: ambient lighting, task lighting and of course, accent lighting. Recessed lighting in itself is typically a great energy saving option.

They can be wired into your normal light switch, but if you want to save even more on energy costs while adding a sense of mood, intrigue and allure to your bathroom, attaching a dimmer switch is the perfect final touch for recessed lighting.

As you continue in your bathroom creation, recessed lighting is just one of many great options to serve your bathroom lighting needs.

When building or remodeling your bathroom, lighting considerations are important. You will want to think about both ceiling lights for adequately lighting the whole room as well as vanity lights for that up-close and personal time with your mirror.

We’ve covered some great options for bathroom ceiling lights, thus far. However, there are so many options to consider, and you can take a lot of creative liberty when it comes to the lights you install in your beautiful new bathroom.

Another great bathroom ceiling light option to think about is pendant lights. Imagine that gorgeous little bauble you love to wear around your neck… it’s the same thing in a way, except much larger and it hangs from your ceiling. You’ve probably seen pendant lights before, the best example being those triangular domes of light that hang over the bar in some nice restaurants.

That’s a basic and simple pendant light, but your choices are by no means limited to that. Pendant lights come in an array of styles from retro to classical to hip and chic. These beautiful light fixtures are great for adding a unique air of romantic whimsy to your favorite room in the house. They come in many shapes, styles and colors and can be hung at varying lengths, so you have a lot of room to play to achieve the lighting you envision.

Pendant lighting is fairly affordable, and while it was made quite popular in the heyday of the 1970s and 80s, it is making a comeback in a big way. Pendant lights are a great choice for setting the mood and atmosphere of your bathroom. Add a dimmer switch, and you have perfect bathroom lighting that everyone will love.

Now, what kind of thought have you put into bathroom vanity lights? It’s still not uncommon to see a bathroom mirror with bulbs all around or a big light, often even a fluorescent light, right above it. Sure, there’s a lot of light, but have you seen the glare and unflattering way these lighting choices reflect things in the mirror?

They make your hair look wispy and odd and your skin takes on an unnatural look, making it difficult to for successful styling, make-up and grooming. Not to mention these false reflections leave you feeling that you really don’t look your best. So, get rid of the old bulb concept and choose a better option.

There are plenty of gorgeous ideas for vanity lighting. A prevailing trend is a row of lights over the mirror with soft, pretty fixtures that give you plenty of flattering light.

These come in many styles and can be just a pair of lights or several lights, depending on how much vanity lighting you need. For bathrooms with large mirrors, especially the kind that take up one wall along the sink area, 2 or 3 vanity fixture sets might be needed. These are a gorgeous alternative to the simple yet unflattering lighting of yesteryear.

For smaller bathrooms, you might consider a different approach. Take my bathroom for instance. I have a rather small bathroom with limited vanity space. My mirror is extremely small compared to a lot of bathrooms. Still, I needed lighting and wanted a pretty touch. I opted for single sconces on either side of my mirror. They offer a nice romantic look and soft flattering light.

With all the lighting options, you’re sure to find something perfectly suited to your want and style.
